Our Story

From a Small Raft to Costa Rica’s Most Trusted Adventure Company

Wave Rafting is a family-run Costa Rica rafting company in La Fortuna, and it started with a kid on a river. Warner Baltodano grew up on the banks of the Sarapiquí, riding old inner tubes with his friends on whatever the water gave them that day. By the time he was head guide at a local white water rafting outfit, he knew those rapids better than most people know their own street. That is where he met Vanessa Willing, a northern Californian leading travel groups through Central America.

One afternoon in 2005
, Warner pulled up with a raft strapped to the roof of his truck and a grin he could not hide. “I bought a boat.” They spent the next year building something around it: Warner brought the river instinct and local knowledge, Vanessa the guest experience and the business head.

In March 2006 they ran their first trip, a small group on the Toro River near La Fortuna, working harder than the margins justified, because rafting was the point and the company just grew around it.

WAVE stands for Warner And Vanessa Expeditions, because in 2005 that is exactly who it was: two people and one raft. Two decades on, it takes a crew. Guides, drivers, operation team, reservations team, and the travel planners and hotels who trust us with their guests.

It is also more than rafting now: the Safari Float, the adventure combos, the Rafting Shuttle between La Fortuna and the coast.

The rivers have not changed. Neither has the reason we run them.

art has not changed.

Safety Standards

20+ Years
One Standard

ICT-licensed bilingual guides, gear checked before every trip, a safety kayaker on every rafting tour, and a full briefing on the riverbank before anyone touches the water. Our river team checks the level every morning and makes the call. That is the part no license covers.

View Safety Certificate

ICT-Licensed Bilingual Guides

Every Wave guide is licensed by the ICT, Costa Rica’s national tourism board, and holds current training in swiftwater rescue and first aid, renewed on schedule.

A Safety Kayaker on Every Trip

One extra set of eyes on the water, ahead of the rafts, on every rafting tour we run. Not an upgrade. Standard.

Fitted Gear, Checked Before Launch

A properly fitted helmet, PFD and paddle for every guest, on NRS and AIRE equipment, checked before it goes on the water.

River Levels Read Every Morning

The Balsa is partially regulated by a hydroelectric dam, and our river team reads the level marks on every river each morning before deciding where we run.

Luego te llevan a comer. Vale la pena disfrutar de esta aventura.

Amazing adventure. We did class 3&4 and it was so much fun. Hanis our boat guide is great and professional. They serve freshly cut juicy fruits in between the rafting tour. Lunch at the end is so tasty. Definitely great experience.

One of the scariest & most exhilarating things I've ever done! I had never rafted white water before & the Balsa level 11 -111 river doesn't kid around. We are both 80 years old & this afternoon was attempted after a morning of Canyoning! We were in a large group (about 80?) but handled expertly by dividing us into separate rafts of 4 - 6, each with an experience Pro. Our fearless leader was Ronald & we spent the whole time following his expert instructions & laughing until we almost fell out. He was fabulous!! Unbelievable experience that you have just got to try! - if you dare:)

Our rafting trip with WAVE was absolutely thrilling. From the moment we were picked up at our hotel to the afternoon drop off. We took the combo tour beginning with the sloth walk. Our guide Stefan was fantastic and before we left we had seen and taken photos of three sloths. One with a baby, one stretched out lounging on a branch and another curled up in a ball. In addition we spotted some monkeys, saw many poison dart frogs and beautiful flowers. We were picked up again and while driving our guide Enzo went over all of the safety information we needed for the raft. As it turned out we had Enzo on our boat and he was amazing and so professional. The stop for a snack of fresh pineapple and watermelon at the half way mark really hit the spot. The buffet lunch was delicious. It was a wonderful way to wrap up a perfect day. I booked directly and spoke to Jonathan twice and met him while checking in at their office. He answered any questions I had and greeted me personally at check in. From beginning to end this was a perfect day and exceeded all expectations. Wave is a fantastic company with friendly and knowledgeable people. This trip for us was a girl trip with my daughter and two granddaughters. It’s an adventure we’ll never forget.

We’ve used Wave Rafting many times with our middle school students, parent chaperones and Tatiana and always have the best experiences! Thanks to Momo, Mariano, Justin, Christopher, and all the other guides who provide fun conversation and special “extras” like floating and riding the bull. Brandon takes exceptional professional photos of our travelers. Rafting with Wave is always a favorite activity among our students and parents! Muchas gracias, Wave! 🍉🍍🌊

Solo puedo decir: ¡impresionante! 100% recomendado.

Jeśli szukasz aktywności sportowej z nutą adrenaliny - to świetne miejsce :)
